Faculty Snapshot: Kristi Bockorny

Dr. Kristi Bockorny is assistant professor of management in Northern’s School of Business.

Originally from Leola, S.D., Bockorny received her undergraduate degree from NSU nearly 20 years ago. She went on to receive her M.A. and Ph.D. from Bellevue University in Nebraska.

Bockorny knew she wanted to be a teacher from a very young age, but she never thought she would be teaching at a collegiate level.

With a double degree from NSU for finance and business education, Bockorny thought she would be teaching business at the high school level.

“Life took me in a different direction, and I ended up teaching part time for a college,” Bockorny said. “I found I really enjoyed teaching college students.”

Bockorny found herself taking a full-time position at Northern when an opening appeared, saying it was like “coming home.”

Hobbies and Projects

Bockorny spends most of her free time with her children, but also enjoys scrap-booking and reading.

“Only recently have I learned to read for fun again,” said Bockorny. “I used to only read for research purposes, like working on my dissertation or as material for my classes.”

Bockorny also enjoys working with student groups on campus, and is a co-advisor for NSU’s Business Club (PBL).

“I enjoy getting to walk hand-and-hand with the students, but they really take the lead and get to work together,” said Bockorny.

She is also part of a Relay for Life of Brown County team, where she volunteers her time walking on tracks or designated paths to raise money toward a cure for cancer.

When it comes to her teaching, Bockorny hopes to help her students recognize a perspective different from their own in her classes.

“I want to show them that they can acknowledge each other’s opinions, even if they don’t agree,” Bockorny said.

Bockorny will be working on multiple research papers this summer, and hopes to have them sent to journals in the near future. She will also be teaching two new Human Resources Management courses starting in the fall.
