Multimedia Musical Performance April 1
A world-renowned saxophonist will provide a multimedia musical performance on Monday, April 1, at Northern. Dr. John Sampen will present “In Two Worlds: Exploring the Duality of Music and Society” at 7:30 p.m. April 1 in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will also feature composer/engineer Mark Bunce. “In Two Worlds” represents their current multi-disciplinary presentation and is designed as an exciting “seamless” musical experience featuring projected visuals, interactive electronics and theatrical activities.
3D Modeling Workshop
Do you want to learn the basics of 3D modeling and how it applies to 3D printing? Plan on attending a workshop held in the Williams Library Creation Lab at 4 p.m. April 2! Instruction will be provided by Jule Mercer and Dr. Greg Blair. The event is free to NSU students, staff and faculty. If you have questions, please contact Lynn Klundt at Lynn.Klundt@northern.edu.
NSU Noon Forum
The next NSU Noon Forum will take place at noon Wednesday, April 3, with “Ye Shall Be as Gods.” The session, which will take place in the Williams Library Round Room, will be led by Drs. Grant Manhart and Ken Blanchard. Noon forums are open to all who are interested – students, staff and the public. Mental Health Fair
Plan to attend the Mental Health Fair on April 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the NSU Student Center Centennial Rooms, hosted by Northern’s graduate counseling students. There will be booths on a variety topics, including:
- Mental health and fitness
- Suicide
- Stress and anxiety reduction
- Substance use
- And MORE!
There will also be a meditation/yoga demonstration at 8 p.m. Bring your own yoga mat/blanket/towel.

Avera St. Luke’s Lab Tour
Are you interested in learning about the Medical Lab Science Degree and what happens in the lab? Join us April 8 in touring Avera St. Luke’s Lab and learning about the different job opportunities available. Meet by the NSU greenhouse connected to the Mewadlt-Jensen Building by 10 a.m. Monday, April 8. The tour will take place 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Primrose Arts and Lecture Series
The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place throughout the academic school year at 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E. On April 9, Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs, will present "NSU: At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs.”
Business Education Event
On Tuesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Missouri River Room, Drs. Barclay and Mathern will present Business Education: Faculty Tips to Guide International and Domestic Student Interaction to Benefit Classroom Learning. Plan to attend this fun, educational event with amazing professors, with free food and friends!
NSU Theater Presents ‘Fun Home’
NSU Theater will present the musical "Fun Home" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theater. Performances will run nightly April 9-13 and is recommended for ages 12 and up. “Fun Home,” one of the first musicals to feature a lesbian protagonist, was adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori from Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic memoir of the same name. It was nominated for the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize, nine Lucille Lortel Awards and won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical. ‘Band Extravaganza III’ set for April 14
NSU Symphonic Band will be holding their concert entitled “Band Extravaganza III – Band a la Mode” April 14, at 3 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. The concert will feature the NSU Symphonic Band, conducted by NSU Professor of Music Dr. Rolf Olson, and NSU Concert Band, conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Audrey Miller. Admission is free and open to the public. Ice cream will be served after the concert.
Wolves Triathlon Registration
Registration is now open for the Wolves Triathlon, hosted by the Northern State Swim Team. The date of the event is April 14. For more information and to register, visit the Wolves Triathlon webpage.
‘A Night of Art and Poetry’
NSU is working with Safe Harbor, United Way and Red Rooster to present “A Night of Art and Poetry.” The event will once again collaborate Northern student poets with student designers to create works of art that will be sold to raise money for Safe Harbor. “A Night of Art and Poetry” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Red Rooster Coffee House, 218 S. Main St. The event, which is free and open to the public, honors National Poetry Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Mathematics Contest
Northern will host the 66thannual Mathematics Contest at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the Barnett Center. Roughly 500 students from approximately 30 area schools are expected to participate, according to Dr. Stacy Trentham, NSU assistant professor of mathematics and contest director. Following the contest, an awards ceremony will take place in the upstairs gym of the Barnett Center at 1 p.m. The contest is not open to the public, but they are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony.

The annual Employee Recognition lunch will be held April 24 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Please RSVP to susan.bostian@northern.edu if you plan to attend.

Avera Health and Wellness Center Beginners Class
Want to start working out but aren't sure where to start? Curious to see what is offered in the Avera Health and Wellness Center (located in the Barnett Center)? Attend the Avera Health and Wellness Center Beginners Class every Tuesday and Thursday through April 26, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The class will include friendly and professional instructors, tutorials on how to use each machine, workout programs provided and optional group workouts. Community Spotlight
“Night in a Car for Journey Home,” a homelessness simulation that challenges the community to spend the night in a car so others don’t have to, will take place on April 26 in downtown Aberdeen. Get a team together and plan to participate in this event, which shines a spotlight on the hidden aspect of homelessness that many in our community experience – living in their cars – while raising money for Journey Home! The overnight event, which will take place 7 p.m. April 26- to 7 a.m. April 27 in the Aberdeen Police Department parking lot, is sponsored by the 2019 Leadership Aberdeen class. Chinese Painting, Ping Pong Workshops on Tuesdays
It’s not too late to join the spring semester Chinese painting and ping-pong workshops every Tuesday at NSU! Landscape painting by Ms. Yaqian Wang is at 1 p.m. in the NSU Student Center. Be Part of Wolves Watch
Looking for an opportunity to serve your campus community while being paid? Here is your opportunity to become involved. Campus Safety is looking for students who are interested in being a part of Wolves Watch. The primary purpose of Wolves Watch is to meet fellow students anywhere on campus and walk with them to ensure safe arrival at their destination (library, parking lot, residence hall, etc.). Trained members will also be eligible to work as additional security for large university events. Sign up online using the Wolves Watch Application.
