COVID-19 News

Through the S.D. Department of Health, Northern has secured BinaxNOW/Quidel over the counter COVID tests. These test kits are free to NSU faculty, staff and students. Students can pick up their kits at Student Affairs (Avera Student Center 222). Faculty and staff should check with their direct supervisors. Complimentary COVID testing for all South Dakotans are still available through Vault Health’s website as well. These are available for both symptomatic/asymptomatic and vaccinated/unvaccinated individuals. For additional COVID-19 information, visit northern.edu/coronavirus, covid.sd.gov or cdc.gov.

 

Art Exhibition Opening Reception

An Opening Reception for “Feminine Attempts” by Klaire Lockheart will be 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2022, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery. This event is free and open to the public. “Feminine Attempts,” on display Feb. 7-March 28, focuses on the complex concept of femininity. Lockheart shares, “My paintings allow me to explore the unnatural expectations of femininity.” The life-size oil paintings employ symbolism through clothing and environment to represent the various roles and expectations placed on women. Lockheart earned her MFA from the University of South Dakota, and she is Miss Art World South Dakota. Her recent solo exhibitions include “Feminine Attempts” at the Sioux City Art Center in Sioux City, Iowa; “A is for Apron” at the Ritz Gallery in Brookings, S.D.; and “Ladylike Representations” at Gallery 120 in Inver Grove Heights, Minn. 

 

Cracker Barrels

Legislative Cracker Barrel sessions for 2022 will be held in the Kessler’s Champions Club in the NSU Barnett Center. Cracker barrels, which are open to the public, will take place 10 a.m.-noon on the following Saturday mornings:

Participate in the ARC3 Survey

Students, check your email for the ARC3 Survey: Through Monday, Feb. 14, students will receive an email invitation to participate in the Administrator Researcher Campus Climate Collaborative (ARC3) Sexual Misconduct Survey. Degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students will be invited to take part in this voluntary survey. Participants could be eligible for $10 in Thunder Bucks! Key Result 77 of the Student Affairs Strategic Action Plan (2020-2021) aims to create and implement a comprehensive and mandatory sexual misconduct education program for all new students (under 60 credit hours). Student Affairs and Title IX will be assessing students’ experiences and attitudes related to sexual misconduct to help inform policies, programs and practices that enhance the campus culture during the spring 2022 semester. The ARC3 is an evidence-based comprehensive and IRB-approved campus climate survey containing 19 modules that assess a range of Title IX violations. All survey responses will be anonymous. NSU Theatre presents ‘Frankenstein in Love’

The NSU Theatre Program will present "Frankenstein in Love" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theater. Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17, 18 and 19 as well as at 3 p.m. Feb. 20. "Frankenstein in Love," written by renowned horror master Clive Barker, reimagines the immortal tale of a monster stitched together from human parts by the maniacal Dr. Frankenstein. All tickets to “Frankenstein in Love” are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. There will be no advance or online ticket sales. “Frankenstein in Love” is a mature-audiences production with strong language, explicit violence, and sexual situations. TRIO Day

On Wednesday, Feb. 23, the TRIO Scholars Association (TSA) is hosting its annual celebration of TRIO Day. This day-long event begins in the Student Center Mall, 11 a.m-1 p.m., with tabling. Tabling will offer free care packages for students, an opportunity to obtain punch cards that offer the chance to win prizes, and more. The day continues with a game night in the Student Center Centennial Rooms from 6 to 8 p.m., where students can play a variety of board games and Kahoot games. A free walking taco bar, drinks and the opportunity to win multiple prize baskets worth over $50 will also be available. All students are encouraged to attend and celebrate the festivities of the day!

 

Feb 23: Equity and Online Teaching with Kevin Kelly 

Join CETL for an interactive conversation on equity and online teaching with Kevin Kelly, Ed.D., of San Francisco State. Dr. Kelly teaches online courses as a Lecturer in the Department of Equity, Leadership Studies and Instructional Technologies at San Francisco State University. Stop by Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 2:30-3:30 in MJ 201 for a fruitful discussion and FREE snacks! If unable to attend in person, please join via this zoom link. 

 

Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant

Northern State University is now accepting applications for the 2022 Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant. Students can receive up to $2,500 toward their independent research project for the academic year. To increase research engagement across campus, our new format now creates an option for multiple awardees. Students from all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants must design a formal research project under the mentorship of a faculty member. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday, March 11. Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum

The annual NSU Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, in the Beulah Williams Library. All students participating in scholarly activity are invited to participate. Submissions of abstracts are due April 1. Northern Edge Award

Do you need funding for a research project, exhibit or academic performance? The Northern Edge Award is available to fund both undergraduate and graduate research projects at NSU. It is especially intended to aid student projects in under-represented disciplines and/or projects that may not be eligible/competitive for other funding opportunities on campus (i.e., student travel grants, or the Competitive Research Grant). Faculty-mentored projects may receive up to $1,000 that can be used for traditional research expenses or discipline-specific costs such as travel for performances/exhibits. GiveNDay is Coming! April 6-7, 2022

The Northern State Foundation is excited to host our second annual day of giving, GiveNDay, on April 6, 2022! This 24-hour challenge is designed to inspire all supporters of Northern to come together as we work to provide funding across the university. Last year was a huge success as our community raised $193,000 from over 1,200 donors. Also known as #OneDayOnePack, this year’s goal is to receive support from 1,800 donors in 24 hours.

American Indian Circle Program

NSU is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to participate in our monthly Smudge the first Tuesday of every month from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. This is a time where we come together and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. For the spring 2022 semester, we will smudge in the courtyard outside MJ 112, which is the new Circle Program student space under the Student Success Center. Everyone is welcome!
