COVID-19 News

  • Current Self-Reported Case Count: Total active cases: 11 (9 students; 2 faculty/staff). Total quarantined or isolated: 30 (7 on campus; 23 off campus). (Numbers as of Jan. 14, 2021; please note: those in quarantine/isolation aren’t necessarily confirmed or symptomatic cases)
  • Mask Level: NSU is at Level 3, which requires face coverings in all public indoor spaces on campus. Learn more about the SDBOR Face Covering Protocol here.
  • Webpage Updates: Northern has updated its COVID-19 Webpage, now including various FAQs for students, faculty and staff.
  • Requesting Supplies: To request COVID-19 supplies from NSU Facilities, please work with your supervisor to determine the proposed needs for your entire department and submit an order using this online form.

Winter Rush

Winter Rush will be in the Student Center from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20. Check out several of our organizations and what all they have to offer to make your college experience even better. But, before you visit the tables, don’t forget to also pick up some winter-themed snacks!

Online Tutoring Sessions

The NSU Tutoring Center offers free online sessions to any Northern student for all general education courses and most upper-level courses. The sessions are conducted via Zoom, which allows real-time interaction between students and tutors. 51st annual S.D. Jazz Festival

The 51st annual South Dakota Jazz Festival will take place on Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center. Five local school groups will be performing and having jazz clinics with NSU fine arts faculty, following mask, distance and performance protocols. From 1:30 to 3 p.m., there will be a live Zoom presentation by Dr. Ron McCurdy, professor of jazz studies at the University of Southern California, titled “Entrepreneurship in the Arts,” open to NSU students and faculty, as well as interested high schools. The festival will culminate with a concert at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Aberdeen Central Jazz I group. Then, the NSU 2 O’Clock Band will finish the concert, featuring students in the band, with some special guests and alumni helping out! All performances are free and open to the public. ‘Grieg and Mozart’ Lecture Recital

Dr. Marla Fogderud, Assistant Professor of Voice, will present a lecture recital “Grieg and Mozart: Emotion Through Song” on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in JFAC Jewett Theater. Joining her will be guest pianist, Dr. Jean Hellner. In addition to the limited live audience, the program will be live streamed. The recital is presented as a co-production of the NSU School of Fine Arts and the Edvard Grieg Society of the Dakotas, and explores how the two composers approached common emotions in their songs. Due to COVID-19, admission is free to all 2020-21 School of Fine Arts events. Limited seating is available at the upcoming lecture recital; passes will be distributed at the door on a first come, first served basis. Masks are required, and attendees are asked to follow appropriate social-distancing protocols. Northern Galleries Virtual Artist Talk

NSU will hold a virtual artist talk for artist and NSU alumna Becky Grismer, whose exhibit, “Taking Root,” is currently on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Art Gallery. The virtual event, hosted by Northern Galleries, will take place on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. Central Time. Grismer, of Spearfish, will discuss her artistic process and the various thematic elements of her exhibit. There will be also be a question and answer session. The public is invited to join this free event via this Zoom link. For more information, visit the NSU Art Department Facebook page. “Taking Root” will be on display through Feb. 19.
