COVID-19 News

Through the S.D. Department of Health, Northern has secured BinaxNOW/Quidel over the counter COVID tests. These test kits are free to NSU faculty, staff and students. Students can pick up their kits at Student Affairs (Avera Student Center 222). Faculty and staff should check with their direct supervisors. Complimentary COVID testing for all South Dakotans are still available through Vault Health’s website as well. These are available for both symptomatic/asymptomatic and vaccinated/unvaccinated individuals. For additional COVID-19 information, visit northern.edu/coronaviruscovid.sd.gov or cdc.gov.

COPLAC Update

Campus community,

I am pleased to announce that Northern State University has been approved and welcomed as a full member of the Council for Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). Full membership offers national recognition that Northern provides transformative education through an integrated curriculum in the liberal arts—including the humanities and fine arts, natural and social sciences, and mathematics—commensurate with that offered by North America’s finest private colleges.

Northern was admitted to COPLAC as a provisional member in 2020. Following a site visit fall 2021 the COPLAC Board of Directors recently voted to approve full membership. Our membership on this prestigious council further affirms our commitment to providing high-quality academics that prepare our students with 21st century critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills.

Now, we join the ranks of prominent COPLAC members such as Truman State University (Missouri), University of Illinois-Springfield and University of North Carolina-Asheville.

Our entire campus community—students, faculty and staff—will benefit from this membership. COPLAC organizes and administers member collaborations, including professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, and hosts regional undergraduate research conferences, where students present the results of senior-year scholarly and creative projects. A web-based undergraduate research journal, Metamorphosis, showcases exceptional student work at all 30 member institutions.

The collective expertise and exceptional efforts of everyone at our university have led to this recognition. I hope you will all join me in sharing special thanks with our dedicated COPLAC committee members including Drs. Erin Fouberg, Eric Pulis, Liz Sills, Hannah Walters and Bill Wieland.

Respectfully,

Dr. Schnoor

Welcome to the Silent Book Club!

This isn’t your regular book club. No set books to read (that's the "silent" part), no pressure to share or discuss. Never worry if you haven't finished the book. No judgment.

The Silent Book Club model means we are not all reading the same book at the same pace. There is no homework and no pressure to lead or contribute to a discussion. We introduce our books and ourselves at the start of the meeting and then we dive into reading for an hour.

Simply bring yourself and whatever you're currently reading (we don't care about genres or formats, anything goes!) All readers are welcome—even e-readers.

While some silent reading parties have a strict ‘No Talking!’ rule, no one will be shushed or shamed at Silent Book Club. The Silent Book Club is about community. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can join.

Please consider joining if you are unable to find time and space to just enjoy a book. That's it! No pressure whatsoever.

The Silent Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m. Next meeting in the Library Round Room Feb. 1, 2022, at 4 p.m.

For additional information, contact Nicole.Christiansen@northern.edu Hosted by Williams Library

American Indian Circle Program

NSU is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to participate in our monthly Smudge the first Tuesday of every month from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. This is a time where we come together and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. For the spring 2022 semester, we will smudge in the courtyard outside MJ 112, which is the new Circle Program student space under the Student Success Center. Everyone is welcome!
