Nominate Employees for Performance Awards

The annual Employee Recognition lunch will be held April 24 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Please RSVP to susan.bostian@northern.edu if you plan to attend.

Public Impact Text Alerts

Brown County Emergency Management has teamed up with South Dakota Helpline Center (211) to bring you “Public Impact Text Alerts.” This program allows you to sign up to receive text messages that will inform you when events occur that affect the community by disrupting day-to-day services or routines. Subscribers will receive notifications regarding incidents such as:

  • Travel Advisories
  • Extensive road closure as a result of infrastructure failure or accident
  • Traffic hazards
  • Fire, haz mat or other evacuations/closures
  • Weather alerts (non-severe)

NSU Study Abroad Update

It has been a busy year for the study abroad office and looks like summer and fall will be as well! This semester we have one student on a student exchange program in Seoul, South Korea. This is what summer, fall and spring are looking like so far:

Summer 2019

  • One NSU faculty-led program to Cambodia, Thailand, with 20 participants led by Drs. Erin Fouberg and Steven Usitalo.
  • One NSU faculty-led program to Spain with 17 participants, led by Drs. Anna Schwan and Andria Moon.
  • One student will be doing an internship in Valencia, Spain.
  • One student will be doing an internship in Gold Coast, Australia.
  • One student received a $5,000 scholarship to take part in a summer program in Japan.
  • Fifteen Wolves will be participating in a variety of summer study abroad programs all over the world: Italy, Chile, Costa Rica, China and South Korea.

Fall 2019

  • One student will be in Okanagan College, Canada, for a semester.
  • One student will be on an exchange program at Meiji University in Japan.

Academic Year 2019-20

  • One student will be in Magdeburg, Germany, for a year

We are proud of the students for getting out of their comfort zone and getting this amazing experience – and we thank all the professors for encouraging, writing recommendation letters and supporting this global education endeavor! Lamont-Rhodes Lecture set for March 26

The fifth annual Lamont-Rhodes Lecture will be held in the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, March 26. The event begins with a breakfast buffet at 7:30 a.m., with the presentation at 8:30 a.m. This year’s speaker is Anna Richards of Cornell University, who will deliver a talk on agricultural succession planning. Tickets for the March 26 event are $20 per person or $125 for a group of eight. Register online or RSVP to the NSU Foundation at 605-626-2550 or nsualumni@northern.edu.

Aberdeen Area & NSU Employment Expo and Job Fair

The Aberdeen Area & NSU Employment Expo and Job Fair is slated for Wednesday, March 27, in the Barnett Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by NSU Career Services, S.D. Department of Labor and the American News, and is open to all NSU students and community members. Currently, there are 48 organizations registered seeking candidates for full-time and part-time employment, internships, and seasonal work. Even if students are not actively seeking employment, it’s a wonderful idea to attend, network with professionals, and learn more about different industries. Students may view attending employers by logging into their Wolf Work accounts, or by heading to this direct link. NSU Noon Forum

The next NSU Noon Forum will take place at noon Wednesday, March 27, with “Get them Talking: Class Discussion Strategies.” The session, which will take place in the Williams Library Round Room, will be led by Drs. Andria Moon and Cheryl Wold. Noon forums are open to all who are interested – students, staff and the public. Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair

NSU will hold the 36thannual Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair on Thursday, March 28. Approximately 60 judges from surrounding areas will be judging the projects of high school juniors and seniors from 20 surrounding schools in the area and interviewing these students. Projects will be judged in the morning and will be open to public viewing from 1 to 7 p.m. only. Following the judging period, there will be a science fair awards ceremony at 6 p.m., held in the upstairs gym of the Barnett Center. This awards ceremony is free and open to the public. In conjunction with the science fair, the junior and senior high science bowls will be held, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The public is invited to attend this event.

College Night at the Wings Game

College Night at the Wings Game is Friday, March 29, at 7:15 p.m. Get reduced ticket prices of $6 with your student ID. Bus pickup and drop-off will be at the Barnett Center; pickup is at 6 p.m.

Avera Health and Wellness Center Beginners Class

Want to start working out but aren't sure where to start? Curious to see what is offered in the Avera Health and Wellness Center (located in the Barnett Center)? Attend the Avera Health and Wellness Center Beginners Class every Tuesday and Thursday through April 26, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The class will include friendly and professional instructors, tutorials on how to use each machine, workout programs provided and optional group workouts. Dietz’s Artwork in JFAC Gallery

Virginia-based artist Alicia Dietz will be exhibiting her artwork in the JFAC gallery through March 29. Dietz is a former Blackhawk Helicopter Maintenance Test Pilot who, in her 10-year career, served in Iraq and has been stationed all over the world. She has since traded in her helmet for wood working tools and builds sculpture that draws its influence from her military experiences.

Community Spotlight

Tickets are available for Giving In Style, a fashion show/luncheon plus silent auction, for the Salvation Army. The event will take place at noon Saturday, March 30, in the Salvation Army dining room, 1003 Sixth Ave. S.W. (Doors open at 11:30 a.m.) Cost is $20 per ticket or six for $100. Tickets are available at Volume Day Salon & Boutique, The Salvation Army Office and Thrift Store, and Dakota Broadcasting. Proceeds will go toward the Salvation Army Snack Pack Program, which provides food to more than 400 school age children in the Aberdeen area. Choir Concert

The Northern State University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will come together to present their spring choral concert, titled “Farewells and Thanks,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, in the JFAC Jewett Theater. Plan to attend!

3D Modeling Workshop

Do you want to learn the basics of 3D modeling and how it applies to 3D printing? Plan on attending a workshop held in the Williams Library Creation Lab at 4 p.m. April 2! Instruction will be provided by Jule Mercer and Dr. Greg Blair. The event is free to NSU students, staff and faculty. If you have questions, please contact Lynn Klundt at Lynn.Klundt@northern.edu.

Primrose Arts and Lecture Series

The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will take place throughout the academic school year at 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E. On April 9, Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs, will present "NSU:  At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs.”

NSU Theater Presents ‘Fun Home’

NSU Theater will present the musical "Fun Home" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theater. Performances will run nightly April 9-13 and is recommended for ages 12 and up. “Fun Home,” one of the first musicals to feature a lesbian protagonist, was adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori from Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic memoir of the same name. It was nominated for the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize, nine Lucille Lortel Awards and won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical. ‘Band Extravaganza III’ set for April 14

NSU Symphonic Band will be holding their concert entitled “Band Extravaganza III – Band a la Mode” April 14, at 3 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. The concert will feature the NSU Symphonic Band, conducted by NSU Professor of Music Dr. Rolf Olson, and NSU Concert Band, conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Audrey Miller. Admission is free and open to the public. Ice cream will be served after the concert.

Wolves Triathlon Registration

Registration is now open for the Wolves Triathlon, hosted by the Northern State Swim Team. The date of the event is April 14. For more information and to register, visit the Wolves Triathlon webpage.

‘A Night of Art and Poetry’

NSU is working with Safe Harbor, United Way and Red Rooster to present “A Night of Art and Poetry.” The event will once again collaborate Northern student poets with student designers to create works of art that will be sold to raise money for Safe Harbor. “A Night of Art and Poetry” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Red Rooster Coffee House, 218 S. Main St. The event, which is free and open to the public, honors National Poetry Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Mathematics Contest

Northern will host the 66thannual Mathematics Contest at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the Barnett Center. Roughly 500 students from approximately 30 area schools are expected to participate, according to Dr. Stacy Trentham, NSU assistant professor of mathematics and contest director. Following the contest, an awards ceremony will take place in the upstairs gym of the Barnett Center at 1 p.m. The contest is not open to the public, but they are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony.

SGA Filling Empty Seats

Attention business and fine arts majors: Student Government Association is looking to fill the empty Business and Fine Arts senator seats! If you are interested, come to our next meeting – they are held in the Missouri River Room at 9 p.m. every Tuesday! Please contact Shanae Doerr or Tyler Harris for more information.

Chinese Painting, Ping Pong Workshops on Tuesdays

It’s not too late to join the spring semester Chinese painting and ping-pong workshops every Tuesday at NSU! Landscape painting by Ms. Yaqian Wang is at 1 p.m. in the NSU Student Center. Ping-pong by Mr. Lihe Liu is at 3 p.m. at the Dacotah Hall gym. No registration is needed! For more information on all of our programs, please follow the NSU Confucius Institute on Facebook.

Be Part of Wolves Watch

Looking for an opportunity to serve your campus community while being paid? Here is your opportunity to become involved. Campus Safety is looking for students who are interested in being a part of Wolves Watch. The primary purpose of Wolves Watch is to meet fellow students anywhere on campus and walk with them to ensure safe arrival at their destination (library, parking lot, residence hall, etc.). Trained members will also be eligible to work as additional security for large university events. Sign up online using the Wolves Watch Application.
