Update on Temporary Closure of 15th and State Street
The City of Aberdeen began the temporary closure of the intersection of 15th Avenue and South State Street on Wednesday, Oct. 2. This is to allow for work on the storm sewer, which is expected to last about two weeks.
Northern employees and students who typically park on the streets around the Barnett Center have the option to purchase a one-time temporary parking pass for $20. The temporary passes are only valid for the Barnett Center lot and are effective through Oct. 31, 2019. You can purchase these temporary passes at the NSU Physical Plant.
In order to prioritize the safety of our students, staff and faculty, along with the well-being of May Overby Elementary students and staff, pickup and drop-off routes for the school are being temporarily altered. May Overby has provided parents with further instructions.
May Overby staff will be allowed to temporarily park in the NSU Foundation lot.

Visit from S.D. Bureau of Information and Telecommunications Reps
Four representatives from the South Dakota Bureau of Information and Telecommunications will be presenting to two management information systems classes. The first class takes place 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, and the second takes place 11-11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16. Both presentations will take place in Lincoln Hall 325. The four representatives – Daren Sell, Barry Marcuson, Krystle Nipp and Wade Douglas – are software engineers and systems analysts. Their topics will be focused on information systems and database development using various tools, languages and modeling techniques. Guests are cordially invited to these presentations. Update from NSU Recreation
Yoga is offered every Tuesday and Thursday in Dacotah Gym, lower studio, at 5:30. Taekwondo is offered to students every Wednesday in Dacotah Gym, upper studio, at 5:30. Zumba is offered every Monday and Wednesday in Dacotah Gym, lower studio, at 5:30. Open pool hours are 8:30-9:30 p.m.
Professional Development Opportunities
Professional development opportunities for NSU faculty and staff will be hosted by members of the instructional design team. Zoom Collaboration Platform Training: Let Jace Brownlee show you how to connect with students and hold virtual office hours using Northern’s official video conferencing tool, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in TC 15 lab. Small Teaching Strategy of Retrieval: Danette Long will share information on how to implement the retrieval strategy* aimed at boosting student understandings and retention of course material at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in TC 15 lab. (*Strategy taken from James Lang’s book on Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning.)

Daktronics Recruiters on Campus
On Thursday, Oct. 17, Daktronics recruiters will be on the NSU campus. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., stop by their recruiting booth in the Student Center mall for employment information and giveaways. Open house for Jewett Regional Science Education Center
The open house Northern’s Harvey C. Jewett IV Regional Science Education Center is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the science center, located at the corner of Twelfth Avenue Southeast and South State Street. Self-led tours will be encouraged, with students and faculty stationed throughout the building to show off each feature.
NSU Theatre’s ‘Brain from Planet X’
The NSU Theatre Department will present the musical "The Brain from Planet X" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre. Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. nightly Oct. 17-19, 25 and 26; at 3 p.m. Oct. 27; and include a special 11 p.m. showing for mature audiences on Oct. 26. Tickets for the production can be purchased online here or at the JFAC Box Office. Tickets are $18, with a Northern faculty/staff discount of $9 and a $2 discount per ticket for groups of 12 or more. NSU students are admitted free with ID. Box office hours are noon-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The box office opens two hours prior to performances. PBL/Business Club Bake Sale
The PBL/Business Club will have its first traveling bake sale of the school year on Friday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Employee Flu Shots
There will be a flu shot clinic for benefits eligible faculty and staff on Oct. 22 from noon to 6 p.m. in the Centennial rooms of the Student Center. Spouses and children of staff are also welcome. Please bring your Dakota Care insurance card with you.
NSU Annual Free Student Flu Shots
Northern will provide free flu shots for students on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Student Center Centennial Rooms A and B. ALL students are encouraged to attend! (Sponsored by: Aberdeen Area POD and NSU Student Rights and Responsibilities.)

Dr. Alexander C. Diener, an associate professor of geography at the University of Kansas, will give three presentations on Oct. 24 and 25. They are:

Senior Recital
Tabitha Schmidt will have her senior recital at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. Schmidt, a percussionist, will perform “Suite for Timpani” by David Mancini, “Chakalaka” by Francisco Perez, “Prelude and Blues” by Ney Rosauro and “2+1” by Ivan Trevino. Also performing will be Sara Krebsbach; Matej Cip and Dylan Unruh (duet); Adam Henning, Aldous Ulvog, and Dr. Travis Netzer (trio); and NSU alum Luke Bergjord.
Sanford Health on Campus
Sanford Health will be on campus Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. in the Jewett Regional Science Education Center to discuss medical lab science job opportunities within Sanford Health. If you are interested in learning more about the medical lab science program on campus, please join us on second floor in classroom 230.

NSU accepting fall 2019 Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant applications
Northern State University is pleased to announce we are accepting applications for the fall 2019 Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant. One student will be chosen to receive up to $2,500 toward their own independent research project. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Applicants must design a formal research project under the mentorship of a faculty member. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Oct. 28, 2019. Basic 3D Modeling Program
The NSU library is hosting a basic 3D modeling program in the library’s Creation Lab on Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. The workshop will help attendees learn the basics of 3D modeling and how it applies to 3D printing. NSU Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture
Author Manoush Zomorodi will discuss “Bored and Brilliant: How Spacing Out Can Unlock Your Most Productive and Creative Self” at the Northern State University Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Zomorodi will speak for about 50 minutes, take questions from the audience, and then sign copies of her book. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. “Bored and Brilliant” explores the connection between boredom and original thinking and considers how we can harness boredom’s hidden benefits to become our most productive and creative selves without totally abandoning our gadgets in the process. The book is available at the NSU Wolf Shoppe for $12.25. Summer hours for the Wolf Shoppe are: 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Friday, June 28, for inventory).
Northern Night
Northern Night will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Dakota Event Center. This annual gala benefits NSU and its deserving students and all faculty and staff are invited to attend and join in those efforts. Split-Pot Tickets Will Raise Money for Scholarships
Tickets for the $30,000 split-pot are available at the NSU Foundation. Only 300 tickets are being sold. The winner will receive $15,000 and $15,000 will go toward Northern student scholarships. Need not be present to win – the drawing will take place at Northern Night on Nov. 16. To purchase a ticket, contact the Foundation at 605-626-2550.
Community Chinese Classes
The NSU Confucius Institute is offering community Chinese courses through Nov. 19. Youth classes take place 3:15-4:15 p.m. Tuesdays, and adult classes take place 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Moscow Ballet Brings ‘Gift of Christmas Tour’ to NSU this November
Tickets are on sale now for the fourth annual performance of the Great Russian Nutcracker at Northern State University. Moscow Ballet will bring the “Gift of Christmas Tour” to Aberdeen at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. The performance will bring holiday magic to life, creating unforgettable memories for all ages. Tickets may be purchased online at the NSU Fine Arts Department webpage.
Save the Date: Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum
The annual NSU Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2020. All students participating in scholarly activity are invited to participate. Registration details to be announced in January.
American Indian Circle Program Cultural Education is First Tuesday of the Month
Northern is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The first Tuesday of every month from 12:15-12:30 p.m. we come together in Spafford 106 and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to come and participate in our monthly Smudge. Everyone is welcome!
