COVID-19 News

Our next FREE on-campus vaccination clinic will be Monday, Nov. 1:

When: 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Avera Student Center Centennial Rooms
What: Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer (no boosters at this time).
How: Walk in or call 605-622-5273 to schedule an appointment
The event is open to all Northern faculty, staff, students and the public (12 and older); under 18 with a legal guardian present.
Per Avera Health, face coverings must be worn within the Centennial Rooms during the vaccination clinic.
Each student who gets vaccinated will receive $25 in Thunderbucks. (Student ID required).

Environmental Club Meeting

The Environmental Club will meet on Monday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. in the Missouri River Room.

Financial Aid, Registrar Moving Back

It’s officially time for Financial Aid and the Registrar’s office to move back to Dacotah Hall! Both Financial Aid and the Registrar’s office will be closed Monday, Oct. 18, during the move. Then, they will be open for business again in their regular location in Dacotah Hall Room 103 on Oct. 19.

Entrepreneurship Lunch and Learn

Calling all students, faculty and staff across campus who are curious about what it takes to be a business owner! Join us for a FREE lunch and learn on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Kessler’s Champion Room to hear success stories and strategies from local entrepreneurs while also learning about the South Dakota FAST Launch program through South Dakota Biotech. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but we ask that you RSVP by Oct. 17 so we can prepare accordingly: RSVP Link.

Aberdeen Area and NSU Job Fair

The Aberdeen Area and NSU Job Fair will take place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20 in the NSU Barnett Center. All students are encouraged to attend to learn about summer internships and employment opportunities. For more information, contact Maggie Pence at maggie.pence@northern.edu.

Northern Lights Submissions

Northern Lights is now taking submissions for the 2022 issue of Northern Lights. Students can submit their stories, poetry, art, creative nonfiction, photography, original essays and songs to northernlights@northern.edu or message us on Facebook! Accepted submissions will be included in our literary magazine that is released in March 2022. Please submit all written works as a Word document (.docx) or a PDF (.pdf), and any artworks as a JPEG (.jpeg) or JPG (.jpg) file. Submissions are open until Dec. 31, 2021. SnackChat: Creating Balance through Intraorganizational Relationships w/Sal Villegas

Dr. Sal Villegas will lead a discussion on how we as faculty/staff can use the tenants of reciprocity (rewarding kindness with kindness) as a model when interacting with students, each other, administrators and community leaders. AWAREwolves will meet on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 6:15 p.m. in the Science Center room 133.

Flu Shot Clinic

The state employee flu shot clinic will be on NSU’s campus Thursday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. in Dacotah Hall. Influenza affects thousands of South Dakotans every year. With COVID-19 still affecting people across the state, getting a flu shot is more important than ever to help protect our workplaces and communities.

Specific instructions for our on-site clinic:

Walk-in Clinic. Complete consent form prior to clinic.
Attach copy of the front of your insurance card to consent
form.
Masks are required if over 2 years of age.

State employees, eligible dependents and retirees on COBRA enrolled in the state employee health plan may receive a flu vaccination at a DOH sponsored event at no cost.

Please review the instructions for the particular clinic you are interested in attending. Some clinics are asking for appointments while others are walk-in clinics amongst other clinic specific guidance.
The Moderna COVID vaccine will be offered at specific flu clinics, which are highlighted in yellow on the schedule. It is safe to receive the flu vaccine and the COVID vaccine at the same time.
You must bring a completed consent form with you to be vaccinated.
COVID-19 protocols will be in place, including the requirement to wear a mask and social distancing upon entry.

Remember, the South Dakota State Employee Health Plan covers the flu shot at 100 percent.

Northern Theatre presents ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’

The NSU Theatre Program will present the musical "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. nightly Oct. 21-23 and at 3 p.m. on Oct. 24. In this hilarious musical version of the famous film, two conmen attempt to put one over on more than a few ladies. “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is set in the French Riviera where the charming swindler Lawrence takes a rough American grifter named Freddy as his apprentice in the art of the con. But when they both find themselves chasing the “Soap Queen of America”—the alluring if clumsy Christine—they may have met their match! All tickets to “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. There will be no advance or online ticket sales. Faculty Training for Online Teaching

Danette Long, Northern’s Instructional Designer, will run the Faculty Training for Online Teaching course multiple times in October and November in an effort to provide faculty in need of this training time to complete all three sessions. Please note, per NSU Policy 2.1.8 Faculty Training for Online Teaching, “Any current faculty who have not completed Northern’s Faculty Training for Online Teaching course have until Dec. 15, 2021 to complete the training course.”

Danette is trying to make the course available at a variety of days and times this semester to accommodate varied schedules. Course completion includes live attendance for each of the three one-hour sessions. Sessions are not recorded. You may attend any of the session dates/times as long as you attend an instance of all three sessions. See the table below for available times:

Environmental Club Highway Cleanup

Environmental Club highway cleanup will be Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. Meet in the Science Center lobby. If interested in volunteering, fill out this Google form.

Honors Research Poster Session

The twelve Honors students participating in the National Collegiate Honors Conference Oct. 27- 31 will have their research posters on display in the Beulah Williams Library on Monday, Oct. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Please stop by and talk with them about their research. This will be great practice for them as they prepare for the national conference.

Idea Pitch Competition

This competition is open all Northern undergraduate students who have creative new ideas. You don’t need to have a full business plan, and no entrepreneurial or business experience is necessary! Applicants (either individuals or teams) will receive valuable insight from successful business people and have the opportunity to win up to $1,000 in cash prizes. At least three (and up to six) individuals or teams will walk away with a cash prize based on our judges’ rulings and the voting of audience members at the Shark Tank competition!

STEP 1: Submit your idea using the registration form. Ideas can be submitted in written or video format! Deadline: Friday, Oct. 29
STEP 2: Finalists will have five minutes to give their pitch at The Shark Tank Competition in Lincoln Gallery on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. The five-minute presentation will be followed by five minutes of Q and A from our judges. Judges will be local business people, including business owners, potential investors and representatives from development centers. Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded following the Shark Tank Competition in the Lincoln Gallery.
STEP 3: Walk away with $1,000 in cash prizes!

Blood Drive

Black Market Trust Concert

The Aberdeen Community Concert Association will present The Black Market Trust in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. This American pop/vocal/swing/jazz band will perform in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater, co-sponsored by NSU Fine Arts. Northern students are admitted free with student ID!

Northern Edge Award

The Northern Edge Award is a new funding opportunity that started in spring 2020. This award was designed to augment existing funding sources for undergraduate scholarship at NSU. It is especially intended to aid student projects in under-represented disciplines and/or projects that may not be eligible/competitive for other funding opportunities on campus (i.e. student travel grants, or the Competitive Research Grant). Faculty-mentored projects may receive up to $1,000 that can be used for traditional research expenses or discipline-specific costs such as travel for performances/exhibits. The application process is more streamlined, but still requires a budget detail and narrative. The application deadline this semester is 5 p.m. Nov. 12. CETL Pedagogy Grants

CETL is excited to offer its annual Pedagogy Grants once again. We will be awarding three grants of up to $1,000 to faculty and staff who are improving instruction at Northern through active learning, high-impact pedagogies and community-oriented projects! Wolf Talks

TRIO Student Support Services is holding the Wolf Talks speaker series in conjunction with the fall 2021 Common Read selection, “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century,” edited by Alice Wong. The dates and topics are:

Nov. 17: Join Archie Messersmith-Bunting and his “If Everyone is ‘Fine’ – What’s Wrong with Me?” talk as he discusses the science behind your feelings, discover new ways to express what you are feeling, and learn important questions to ask when you are worried someone in your life might not be “fine.”

Artist Reception in JFAC Gallery

The work of artist Dwayne Wilcox will be on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Nov. 30. Wilcox currently resides in Rapid City and is a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe. He is best known and celebrated for his Ledger Art, a term for predominately Plains Indian narrative drawing or painting on paper or cloth. Wilcox uses humor and recognizable aspects of contemporary culture to convey a message or narrative. Each is reflective, personal, and tells a story. Paintings by Wilcox will also be featured in this exhibition. Wilcox’s paintings are dynamic, with striking colors and engaging imagery.

Notice for all State Vehicle Users

If you use state vehicles or plan to use one in the future, please be sure to read the “Vehicle Policies and Procedures” handbook prior to driving. It can be found online at this link on the right side of the page, or copies are available in Becky Gilbert’s office in Facilities Management. After you read it, you need to sign the “Vehicle Rules and Regulation Form” and turn it in to Gilbert. This is also online under the policies and procedures handbook. If you have questions, contact Gilbert. Also, when you use state vehicles, please remember they need to be returned full of gas and clean, both inside and outside. The Voyager card that is with the keys can be used for a car wash. Of course, in the winter if the vehicle is parked outside, please don’t wash it.

How to Earn Points

All regular season home competitions are worth 10 points. Some games are worth 20 points and are promoted as “Double Howling Wolves Points” games. If you attend two or more separate athletic events in the same day (i.e. football and volleyball) then you will receive an additional 5 points for that day. Double-header events (i.e. basketball, baseball, and softball) are worth 10 points throughout the entirety of the doubleheader.

All points reset each month allowing for a new opportunity each month to win the monthly prize.

All home athletic events are FREE for NSU Students who have a valid student ticket so there is no required cost to be a part of the Howling Wolves.

All Howling Wolves members are highly encouraged to sit in the designated Student Section at all home athletic events. Become an active member of the Howling Wolves Student Fan Club and help us defend our territory! GO WOLVES!
