NSU NEWS UPDATE – Sept. 17, 2018

Welcome to the NSU News Update - providing information on events happening on campus or involving NSU students, staff and faculty.

Constitution Day is Sept. 17

Today is Constitution Day! On campus, there will be a display in the NSU Beulah Williams Library, flags and decorated offices – and even Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty walking around. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the NSU Student Center, the League of Women Voters will register people to vote and the Dacotah Prairie Museum will have a display. Over lunch, the Wolves Den will offer patriotically themed food. Then at 4:30 p.m., the American Legion and Exchange Club will retire American flags in the Barnett Center parking lot. Click here to learn more.

Library Carnival is Sept. 18

The Library Carnival will be Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the NSU Williams Library. Come play games, eat cotton candy and win prizes while learning about the library. Contact Kristin Echtenkamp at Kristin.Echtenkamp@northern.edu with any questions.

Freshman Elections for SGA

The Freshman Elections for Student Government Association will take place Sept. 19 and 20.

Create ‘N’ is Sept. 19

The 2018 Create ‘N’: A Festival Celebrating Entrepreneurship, Creativity, Innovation and Workforce will take place Wednesday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. Keynote speakers are Dr. Art Diamond, Darrell D. Dorrell and Ron Gulaskey. The festival is designed for high school and college students in the region. Sessions are set up on the hour to match NSU course schedules. All School of Business classes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. that day should plan on being there. For more information, click here, call the School of Business at 605-626-2400, or email Julie.M.Johnson@northern.edu or tim.mantz@northern.edu.

Noon Forums begin Wednesday

NSU Noon Forums will commence every Wednesday at noon in the Williams Library Rotunda. This week's topic is as follows:

Sept. 19: "My Constitution Can Beat Up Your Constitution"; presented by Jon Schaff, Brian Bengs and Ken Blanchard. This topic, a continuation of the Sept. 17 Constitution Day festivities, should shed light on the issues raised in the Senate hearings on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanagh, including especially questions on the nature of the Constitution and how it should be applied.

NSU Wolf Talks begin Sept. 19

The themes for the fall Wolf Talks series are: community, courage, responsibility and creating change. The schedule appears below:

Sept. 19: Aberdeen Police Department; “The Responsibility to Serve and Protect;” 6:30 p.m.; JFAC Blue Room

Oct. 3: Dr. Anton Treuer; “Creating Change/Cultural Equity;” 6:30 p.m.; JFAC Blue Room (Sponsored by Residence Hall Association, Native American Student Association, Multicultural Student Affairs, University College and TRIO Student Support Services)

Nov. 7: Dr. Amber Mathern; “Dueling Identities;” 6:30 p.m.; JFAC Blue Room

Wolf Talks, which are free and open to the public, are held in conjunction with the NSU Common Read and are sponsored by TRIO Student Support Services.

Wolves on the Green is Sept. 23

Join the Residence Hall Association as they kick off Gypsy Days 2018 with “Wolves On The Green” featuring Knockerballs on the Residential Quad! Join us Sept. 23 from 2 to 6 p.m. to knock around the quad with your friends!

Gypsy Days starts Sept. 24

Gypsy Days, Northern’s annual homecoming celebration, begins Monday, Sept. 24. The 103rd annual NSU Gypsy Day Parade is Saturday, Saturday, Sept. 29, with a start time of 9 a.m. This year’s parade theme is “Wolves at the Movies.” For information, click here to read more, or contact the NSU Student Affairs office at 605-626-3007 or gypsydays@northern.edu.

Ribbon cutting: Great Plains East and Great Plains West

Northern State University will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its two new residence halls at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, during the annual Gypsy Days celebration. Great Plains East and Great Plains West both opened this fall on the Northern campus. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be held on the Great Plains East Patio. Read more here.

2018 Hall of Fame Banquet 

The 2018 Hall of Fame Banquet is set for Friday, Sept. 28, at the Best Western Ramkota. The night will kick off with a social hour at 5 p.m. in the banquet room, followed by the dinner and program at 6 p.m. Tickets are required to attend the banquet, and are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Those looking to attend should contact the Northern State University Foundation at 605-626-2550 or nsualumni@northern.edu by Sept. 15, 2018. The 2018 Hall of Fame class includes Noelle (Hall) Bergan, Baron Blanchard, Melissa (Gamble) Haggins, Eric Longhenry, Dale McElhany, and the 1969 Wolves football team. For Freedoms 50 State Initiative

The NSU art department is participating in the For Freedoms 50 State Initiative: a non-partisan, nationwide campaign to use art as a platform for broad civic participation. “Dialogue As Art” is a collaborative exhibition in the Johnson Fine Arts Gallery that will be on display through Sept. 30.

NSU Swimming Collecting Sports Bras

NSU swimming is collecting new sports bras for the sports bra project, an organization that helps women and girls who do not have access to bras get involved in sports. We are collecting new bras in Coach Monanian’s office (47A in the Barnett Center) through Gypsy Days weekend. Find more info here.

Primrose Arts and Lecture Series

The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will start Sept. 11 and take place throughout the academic school year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E.

Presenters and topics are as follows:

Oct. 9: "From Russia to Aberdeen with Love"; presented by Dr. Elvira Sanatullova-Allison, Dean of Millicent Atkins School of Education.

Nov. 13: "James King, Indian Scout"; presented by Dr. David Grettler, professor of history.

Feb. 12: "Hub City History: Preserving and Presenting the Past in the NSU Archives"; presented by Mr. Robert Russell, director of Beulah Williams Library.

March 12: "Ceramic Form and Fragment: Artwork of Gratia Brown"; presented by Ms. Gratia Brown, Assistant Professor of Art.

April 9: "NSU:  At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs"; presented by Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs.

Study Abroad Fair

The NSU Study Abroad Fair is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Student Center Mall. The purpose of the free event is for students to learn more about the more than 100 study abroad programs at Northern. The fair will include study abroad advisors, professors, previous study abroad students and NSU study abroad partners. For more information, contact NSU Study Abroad and CEIB Advisor Dominika Blum at Dominika.Blum@northern.edu.

2018 NSU Undergraduate Competitive Research Grants

Eligible undergraduate students are welcome to submit a proposal for a grant of up to $2,500 in support of an independent research project. Proposals for Calendar Year 2019 (Cycle 2) are due Monday, Oct. 29, 2018. Research Project Advisor approval is required for grant-funded research conducted during the summer. Chinese Brush Painting Workshops

Chinese brush painting workshops will be held Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in the Student Center from Sept. 11 to Oct 30. The workshops are free to NSU students, faculty and staff.  All levels are welcome.

NSU Culturefest is Nov. 1

Organizers of Culturefest are seeking entertainment and community groups to participate in the event this fall on the Northern campus. Culturefest, a celebration of cultures from around the nation and the world, will be held 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Barnett Center. Culturefest is free and open to the public. Individuals or groups interested in participating are encouraged to contact the NSU Office of International Programs at 605-626-7802 or international@northern.edu.

2018 Common Read Lecture is Nov. 14

Angie Thomas, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” will deliver NSU’s 2018 Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture—is free and open to the public. The award-winning “The Hate U Give” has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. Great Russian Nutcracker will return to NSU on Nov. 26

The one and only Moscow Ballet Great Russian Nutcracker will return to the Northern State University Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Click here to read more. Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition

The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion. Click here to read more information about the competition.

May Overby Elementary School is looking for afternoon crossing guards! Typically, a shift runs from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. Contact Mike.Neubert@k12.sd.us if interested. This school is seeing an increase in traffic due to NSU construction projects.
