COVID-19 News

The COVID-19 vaccine is now widely available in South Dakota, and Northern State University encourages all members of the campus community to get vaccinated if they are able.

Asian Holiday Celebration with OIP

The Office of International Programs is organizing a dinner to celebrate the Asian holidays of Korean Thanksgiving (Chuseok) and the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. We will celebrate by getting together and enjoying a meal and this festive time as an international family. Please join us if you can on Monday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Tokyo Restaurant in the Uptown Mall. (Individuals will be responsible for paying for their own meals). Please complete this quick RSVP-survey by noon today. Happy Chuseok and Mid-Autumn everyone! 

 

Fallin’ Into Fun

The NSU Small Group Communication Class is hosting an event, Fallin’ Into Fun, on Sept. 21. The event will take place 12:30-1:45 p.m. in the mezzanine of the Avera Student Center. There will be candy apples, trivia, duck fishing, prizes and more!

 

Wolf Talks

TRIO Student Support Services is holding the Wolf Talks speaker series in conjunction with the fall 2021 Common Read selection, “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century,” edited by Alice Wong. The dates and topics are:

  • Sept. 22: A panel comprised of Dan Cleberg and “Better Ride” will entertain questions and highlight the diverse members of the band. Performance to follow the informative panel.
  • Oct. 6: Kendra Gottsleben will discuss her personal story of self-advocacy and her ambition to be a helpful resource to support individuals who have severe or life-threatening illnesses or disabilities.
  • Nov. 17: Join Archie Messersmith-Bunting and his If Everyone is “Fine” – What’s Wrong with Me? talk as he discusses the science behind your feelings, discover new ways to express what you are feeling, and learn important questions to ask when you are worried someone in your life might not be “fine.”

All Wolf Talks will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. For more information, email Victoria.Garrett@northern.edu.

 

Noon Forums

Noon Forums, which are free and open to the public, will continue throughout the semester at noon most Wednesdays in the library. Remaining topics are as follows:

Student-Faculty Quiz Bowl

Student Directors Wanted!

Have you ever wanted to direct? Northern Theatre is seeking multiple undergraduate directors from any major for our November student-produced show, “An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein.” This show is a collection of short plays by the renowned poet/writer. Applications are due on Friday, Sept. 24. Please email Professor Kane Anderson at kane.anderson@northern.edu for more information about the script, schedule and process. (Auditions are Oct. 1 and the show runs Nov. 19-20.)

 

Sept. 28: CETL SnackChat - Undergraduate Research with Jon Mitchell  

We are excited to present Dr. Jon Mitchell as CETL's first Snackchat host of the semester. Join Dr. Mitchell for a discussion on working with students in undergraduate research. Don't forget, we provide FREE snacks. Event date: Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 2:30 p.m. in MJ 201. If you are unable to attend in person, please join us asynchronously through this zoom link. 

 

3D Printer Informational Session

A 3D Printer Informational Session will take place at 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Library Creation Lab. The session is a general introduction to 3D printing and is open to all NSU students, faculty and staff. The event will highlight some uses for 3D printing, how to go about 3D printing something in the library, and a demo of the 3D printer in use.

 

Faculty Exhibition on display in JFAC Gallery

The NSU Art Department Faculty Exhibition is on display this fall in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Oct. 6, featuring work by Derek Decker, Alexis Doerr, Jay Hopkins, Peter Kilian, Jason Knowles and Nadya Preszler. The exhibition features a variety of artwork, such as paintings, ceramics, photography, mixed media and digital media. A reception will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the JFAC Gallery. This event is free and open to the public. A virtual exhibition will also be available to view on the Northern Galleries webpage.

 

Gypsy Days 2021

Gypsy Days 2021 takes place Sept. 27-Oct. 2, with the theme of “Wolves of the Galaxy.”

  • The Steps for Shep 5k will take place Saturday, Oct. 2. Students can sign up for free on the day of the race. Sign up and find more information at this link.
  • The Gypsy Day Parade starts at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 in downtown Aberdeen. Register by 5 p.m. Sept. 24 at this link.
  • International Programs: Do you have a connection to your heritage and its culture? Do you want to represent it in the homecoming parade on Oct. 2? Join the Office of International Programs as we march through Aberdeen representing the great diversity of our international students and community. You may carry a flag or represent your culture in some other way. If you are interested, please complete this survey. Contact Stephen Deduck with any questions.

SDBOR Outreach Session

The South Dakota Board of Regents will hold outreach sessions to update campus communities and local legislators about the Senate Bill 55 Task Force process and recommendations. The meeting on the NSU campus will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Johnson Fine Arts Center Room 117. Representatives of the Board of Regents, its staff, and public university presidents will be on hand to visit with area residents. The public is invited to attend. The task force takes its name from a bill approved by the 2020 South Dakota Legislature, which directed the Board of Regents to create a task force to study the operations and functions of higher education institutions under the regents’ control.

 

2021 Common Read

Northern’s fall 2021 Common Read book will be “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century,” by Alice Wong. Wong will deliver the 2021 NSU Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 13. Attendees are invited to gather in the Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Jewett Theater to listen to Wong, who will present live via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public. Students may order copies of the book through Akademos when they order their fall textbooks. The book is also available for purchase at the NSU Wolf Shoppe for $12.95 (plus tax). Read more here!

 

Aberdeen Area and NSU Job Fair                                                  

The Aberdeen Area and NSU Job Fair will be held Wednesday, Oct. 20, on the Northern campus. The event, which is open to the public, will take place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the NSU Barnett Center. Employers may register online at this link. Registration cost is $175, and the deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 15. For more information, contact Pence at maggie.pence@northern.edu.

 

Tech Services Request System

Northern Technology Services utilizes an online work request system to assign and track requests for technical assistance. If you need assistance, please visit https://support.northern.edu and log on using your Northern credentials. Based on the ticket type, the request will automatically be routed to the appropriate department and staff member. This system will allow us to manage our workload in an efficient and effective manner and provide us valuable data related to the services we provide and guide us in future decision making. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to providing you support!
