Fans attending a recent Wolves match in the Northern State University Barnett Center have been treated to an impressive sight: a brand new, center-hung scoreboard in Wachs Arena.

The scoreboard, installed this summer by Daktronics, is the largest collegiate center-hung video display system in the state of South Dakota—and it’s just one of the recent upgrades completed in the Barnett Center.

Other projects include a new in-ground wood floor in Wachs Arena, a new mat for NSU Wrestling, and a new display of conference and season awards. All of the improvements are aimed at benefiting Wolves athletic teams, enhancing the experience of fans and providing a state-of-the-art space for the entire region.

“All together, these upgrades add up to a first-rate facility, and we’re excited about what this means for our student-athletes, our fans and everyone who uses the Barnett Center,” said NSU Director of Athletics Josh Moon. “With work starting soon on the regional sports complex adjacent to the BC, that only adds to the excitement.”

Scoreboard Details

The four-sided scoreboard features displays on each side that can show a combination of live video, instant replays, up-to-the-minute statistics, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages, according to information from Daktronics.

While the display has been an exciting addition for NSU athletic events, the scoreboard is used at other times as well. The scoreboard is on 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, displaying messages such as campus events.

Donor Support Crucial

Donor support was crucial to this project, with funding for the scoreboard coming from the Dahme family and Reede family as well as Dacotah bank.

“This proves once again that Northern’s support from the community and region is unmatched, and we’re so grateful to these donors,” said NSU President Dr. Tim Downs. “The scoreboard, along with all of the improvements to the Barnett Center, will truly benefit not only our campus but the entire region.”
