Student Spotlight: Carly Wheeting

Carly Wheeting, a junior at NSU, is a communication studies major with a double minor in geography and agribusiness.

Originally from Groton, S.D., Wheeting came to NSU to double major in elementary and special education before she decided it wasn’t a career she wanted to be in forever.

“I realized that I did not want to spend my life in a primary or secondary classroom and that I could benefit others more by pursuing a different career,” Wheeting said. “I still have a passion for learning and students, but I knew that this was a career path that I did not want to pursue.”

Although Wheeting had chosen NSU for its elite teaching program, as well the beautiful campus, she knew she wanted to stay even after she found she didn’t want to be a teacher.

“The professors and students were the people I wanted to see each and every day, and they are the ones I want to learn from,” Wheeting said. “These amazing people allowed this university and community to become my new home.”

NSU Travels and World Classrooms

Wheeting also grew up traveling to Northern to watch athletic events, amazed by the “awesome athletes” as well as the coaching staff.

“I just remember being in awe of the amazing environment of Wachs Arena, along with thebeautiful campus,” said Wheeting.

During her summer, Wheeting has been working for World Classrooms, an educational tour organization for high school students.

“This has been an amazing experience for me. I am able to lead hundreds of students throughout places like Washington, D.C., and New York City,” Wheeting said. “Not only do I get to travel for my job, but I get to meet students from all throughout the Midwest.”

Since starting at NSU, Wheeting now finds herself always wanting to learn more and always asking the hard-to-answer questions.

“This change has allowed me to become more educated not only in the classroom, but throughout everyday life,” Wheeting said. “College also has changed me, as I have realized that there is so much in this world, and I have only experienced so little.”

Plans for the Future

Wheeting’s goals for the near future are to graduate, as well as involve herself more throughout the community as well as the school district.

“I’ve always wanted to start a family that is an asset to the community we live in. I want to benefit those around me and always be lending a helping hand,” said Wheeting. “There is no downside to working to help your community. I get to meet others and create a network that can only be beneficial toward me.”

Although Wheeting isn’t sure what career she would like to obtain just yet, she knows that she would like to work with people to benefit their lives in whatever way she can.
