Student Spotlight: Gabriel King

Gabe King, an economics major in Northern’s School of Business, is dedicated towards success in his education as well as his sport of choice—basketball.

Originally from Irene, S.D., King chose economics for its perfect mix of math and government aspects. After taking a micro and macroeconomics class, King knew that economics was for him.

King came to NSU for its great academic resources as well as its basketball team, which had an appearance in the 2018 national championship game.

“NSU has prepared me for my future career through the specific material I have covered in classes, as well as the work ethic instilled in me through basketball,” King said. “Mostly the grueling schedule resulting in great time management skills.”

King has found Northern helped him to become a more open-minded individual, as well as made him more well-rounded and helped him experience new things.

Internships and Hobbies

When King isn’t studying, he is working as a college financial representative at Northwestern Mutual in Aberdeen, where he works with veteran financial advisors to help clients reach their financial plans and goals.

“I’m an intern at Northwestern Mutual for now, but I plan on developing this internship into a full-time career,” King said. “I had been looking into internships specifically related to economics. I went through the interview process, and absolutely loved it. I haven’t doubted that this is where I want to be since I walked in the door.”

King enjoys working at Northwestern Mutual because it allows him to achieve one of his biggest motives in life—helping people, as well as making their lives easier and better.

“I try to affect everyone I come in contact with in a positive way,” said King, “which is why I am pursuing a career with Northwestern Mutual.”

King also enjoys active past times like golfing, Frisbee golfing, ultimate Frisbee, pool and ping-pong.

Plans for the Future

In the near future, King hopes to extend his internship at Northwestern Mutual into a full-time job, as well as become a college recruiter and eventually a full-time representative for Northern and beyond.

King would also like to work hard and lead his basketball team to another conference championship.

“I make it my goal to outwork everyone I’m up against,” said King. “Whether it be Northwestern Mutual or the Northern men’s basketball team, I always give it my all.”
