Student Spotlight: Harrison Bruns

Harrison Bruns, a double major in communication studies and environmental science, is big into conservation and loves nature.

Originally from the Twin Cities, Bruns was on track to attend a larger college, but found it may not be the best choice for him.

“I knew about Northern because my father and a lot of his siblings went to Northern for school,” said Bruns. “I was initially very uncomfortable at Northern—just because it was so small compared to other places I have lived, but I have since come to love Northern.”

Bruns had initially come to NSU to study only environmental science, but decided to add a communication studies major to give himself more career options once he finished his education.

“Science has always been something that I have had an interest in, and I’m big into conservation. I love nature,” said Bruns. “But, last summer I worked at a state park in Minnesota, and it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, so I added the communications degree to give myself more routes after I graduate.”

Making a Difference and Extracurriculars

As a nature lover, Bruns is determined to leave a mark on the world and to make a difference.

“I’m a social media buff—I go on Twitter a lot, and some of the stories I see make my heart hurt,” said Bruns. “I don’t know what exactly I want people to know me for, but I know I want to make a positive difference.”

During the summers, Bruns works as a Caddy Master at Midlands Hills Country Club in his home-town. He has worked there since eighth grade, something to be said about his dedication.

Between studies, Bruns participates in multiple campus activities and clubs such as the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and NSU Speech and Debate team. He also works as a resident assistant in the Great Plains East residence hall.

His favorite club is CAB, a volunteer, student-led organization that sponsors live entertainment and special events with a mission to further unify the campus.

“I have been in CAB since my freshman year,” said Bruns. “I get to be an executive member this year, and I’m really excited to do big things in that position.”

Plans for the Future

As a current junior, first and foremost Bruns would like to graduate with his double major, but he isn’t quite sure where he wants his degree to take him.

“I am planning on going to either graduate school or law school. Depending which way I go, I could end up doing different things,” said Bruns. “I hope to iron out a plan this academic year for my future.”

Despite not knowing exactly what career path he would like to take, Bruns is interested in broadcast journalism, as well as the idea of going to law school. No matter what he does, Bruns hopes to leave a positive impact on the world.

“Whether it involves helping and mentoring kids in situations less fortunate than mine; helping to drive the dialogue we so desperately need on numerous issues not only in this country, but on a global scale; or even something as simple as being the best son, brother, grandson, etc. that I can be,” said Bruns, “I want to leave a positive impact on this world.”
