Mathematics is a vast, dynamic intellectual discipline pursued for millennia for its intrinsic beauty and remarkable utility in modeling phenomena of everyday life.  Mathematics lies at the heart of modern science, and finds myriad applications in economics, finance, technology, and engineering.

In 2014, Careercast.com ranked “mathematician” and “university professor” as the top two most desirable occupations in the United States.  Graduating with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Northern will provide a strong foundation for anyone wishing to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree.

The bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Northern is not just for someone who plans to obtain a graduate degree! Math majors can find employment in many of America’s industrial companies working alongside scientists and engineers.  Math majors are sought after by a host of government agencies and leading technology corporations.  Examples include the CIA, NSA, ORNL, Microsoft, and Google.

Keen analytical skills, creative problem-solving abilities, comfort navigating abstract ideas, and an aptitude to express complex ideas in efficient terms are hallmarks of one who can thrive in the world of higher mathematics. These characteristics are attractive to both America’s institutions of higher learning and employers in engineering, finance, industry, technology, law, journalism, and medicine.
