ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University has announced the 2022 winners of the Northern Edge Awards and Undergraduate Competitive Research Grants.

Winners of the Northern Edge Award—which is designed to aid student projects in under-represented disciplines—are as follows:

NSU Spring Choral Concert set for May 1

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Annual Spring Choral Concert will take place at 3 p.m. May 1 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater.

The concert will feature the NSU Concert Choir, Early Musick Ensemble and Chamber Singers.

The Concert Choir will open with three 20th century American classics—Robert Page’s arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s “The Best of All Possible Worlds,” James Erb’s arrangement of “Shenandoah,” and Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia.”

Final Concert of the Season with the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony set for April 23 at NSU

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony invites you to join us for an extravaganza concert, entitled “Starburst”—showcasing the talents of more than a hundred people on stage.  Dr. Christopher Stanichar, Director of the AUCS, leads the orchestra for this final concert of the season. 

The concert takes place on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. There will be a Pre-Concert Conversation scheduled for 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall.

NSU Jazz Swing Party set for April 29

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The annual Northern State University Jazz Swing Party will be held 7-11:30 p.m. Friday, April 29.

The public is invited to the event, which will take place at Aberdeen’s City Lights Event Center, 316 S. Second St.

Performing will be the NSU Two O’clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart; NSU One O’clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by James McKinney; and the Citrisity Band.

NSU alumna wins prestigious Milken Educator Award

ABERDEEN, S.D. – For Northern State University alumna Nichole Bowman, a school assembly brought the surprise of a lifetime when she was presented with a prestigious national teaching award.

Bowman, who teaches math at T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre, is one of only about 60 teachers nationwide to win the annual Milken Educator Award, which carries a monetary prize of $25,000 and is called the "Oscar of teaching."

NSU’s Netzer to hold tuba recital on April 7

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Dr. Travis Netzer will hold a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in Krikac Auditorium. 

Netzer, a lecturer of tuba and euphonium at NSU, will perform a tuba recital that blends classical and popular music. He will combine more traditional performance repertoire with “rock tuba,” in which he uses guitar distortion pedals and loops stations to perform covers of rock tunes. 

Bach’s Lunch Concert set for March 23 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Chamber Singers, under the direction of Timothy Woods, will present the 11th Bach’s Lunch Concert at noon Wednesday, March 23.

The concert, which honors the 337th birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach, will take place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. N.E., Aberdeen.
