The 2017-18 squad brought the program to new heights winning the NSIC Overall and North Division Championships, the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament Championship, and the NCAA Central Region Championship. The Wolves tallied a school record 36 wins, which is the most by any South Dakota collegiate program, reaching the NCAA Elite Eight for just the second time in program history. They tallied the first Elite Eight victory and advanced to the NCAA National Championship game with wins over East Stroudsburg and Queens. The Wolves opened the season on an 18-game win streak, tying the school record set in 1992-93.

Four Wolves were named to the NSIC All-Conference teams in Ian Smith, Logan Doyle, Darin Peterka, and DJ Pollard. Smith also garnered All-Region accolades from the NABC and D2CCA, while head coach Paul Sather was named the NSIC and NABC Central Region Coach of the Year. Pollard proved his worth both on the court and in the classroom, being honored with the NSIC Elite18 and NCAA Elite90 Awards, while also earning CoSIDA Academic All-American® recognition. Three Wolves were named to the NSIC All-Tournament team (Pollard – MVP, Smith, Peterka), while two were named to the NCAA Central Region All-Tournament team (Smith – MVP, Doyle), and another three were named to the Elite Eight All-Tournament team (Smith, Peterka, Doyle).
