ABERDEEN, S.D. – High school strings players are invited to join the inaugural Northern Honors Orchestra.

The orchestra, organized at Northern State University, consists of two fun-filled days of rehearsals and making connections with string players across the Upper Midwest. The event takes place Jan. 12 and 13, 2024 at the Johnson Fine Arts Center on the Northern campus.

Students get to “delve deeper into string techniques while getting to know fellow string peers,” said Dr. Christopher Stanichar, director of orchestras at Northern.

“The purpose of Northern Honors Orchestra is to offer high school students the opportunity to learn great orchestral music under the guidance of our fabulous string staff,” he said. “This will be an intense, fun-filled two days with a focus on music.”

Any current high school student (with the recommendation of their high school orchestra director) is welcome to participate in the orchestra. Students accepted into the honors orchestra will receive music to prepare for the event, before the two-day event on campus.

A public performance will cap off the event at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.
