ABERDEEN, S.D. – Jerry Fogg’s “Native Soul Art: 11 Degrees of Tatanka” will be on display until May 14, 2021 in the JFAK Gallery at Northern.

On Wednesday, April 14, artist Jerry Fogg will be in the JFAC Gallery from 4-5 p.m. to discuss his work and artistic process. During this time, drum group T’a Bloka Ska will be in the JFAC lobby performing songs. This event is free and open to the public.

Jerry Fogg, an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe (Ihanktowan Nakota Sioux Oyate), uses various materials to create unique works of art that tell a story. “Foggma” is the name Fogg has given his distinct mixed media style and approach. Every piece is one-of-a-kind, and never reproduced.

Culture and history are abundant in “Native Soul Art: 11 Degrees of Tatanka.” The story of White Buffalo Calf Woman greets visitors as they enter the gallery space. Each painted buffalo skull is uniquely adorned with beadwork, feathers, and objects that represent and distinguish traditional elements of Nakota culture.

Each of the interior walls display a painted buffalo skull and buffalo hide representing one of the four directions: North, East, South, and West. Didactics accompanying each display explain the significance of each direction in Nakota culture. The interior walls also feature a striking variety of Fogg’s mixed media artwork, consisting of materials and found objects Fogg has collected.

Fogg currently lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up on the Crow Creek Reservation near Fort Thompson, South Dakota. Fogg attended Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, South Dakota, and Dakota State College in Madison, South Dakota.

Masks are required for all patrons, and attendees are asked to follow appropriate social-distancing protocols.
