ABERDEEN, S.D. – A Northern State University student won best 20th Century U.S. History paper at the recent USD Student History Conference, held in February.

James Heisinger, a sophomore history education major, won for his paper, “Barry Goldwater: Losing the Battle but Winning the War." Heisinger wrote the paper for a course at Northern, “History 361: US in the 1960s,” taught by NSU Professor of History Dr. Ric Dias.

“I've always been interested in politics – including politicians, the different parties, and especially looking at how political systems in the U.S. change over time, and that's what my paper discusses,” Heisinger said.

Originally from Sioux Falls, Heisinger said he chose to attend Northern because the programs he planned to pursue – education and history – were the best programs at NSU.

“I was also impressed by Northern's apparent desire to grow, provide opportunities and generate community,” he said.

Now, he said Northern has helped him succeed in virtually every way.

“The faculty, on-campus organizations, small campus and community have given me so many opportunities to grow and succeed,” Heisinger said. “It's thanks to all these things that I've found the success I have.”
