ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two Northern State University School of Business students, along with a Northern faculty member, will present at an upcoming marketing conference in Chicago.

NSU students Elise Benner and Ashley Meyer will present “Does Emotional Intelligence Influence Pro-Environmental Behavior?” at the Marketing Management Association Spring Conference, set for March 25-27.

At the same conference, the students’ faculty advisor, Dr. Hannah Walters, will present “To Quiz or Not to Quiz in Principles of Marketing.” According to the abstract, in this research, Walters, assistant professor of marketing, seeks to evaluate the effect of quizzes as a study strategy for exams in Principles of Marketing.

The students’ research aims to answer the question: Does emotional intelligence influence pro-environmental behavior? According to the abstract, existing studies have identified emotional intelligence as a predictor of numerous behaviors, yet few explore the relationship between emotional intelligence and pro-environmental behavior. With their research, Benner and Meyer seek to bridge that gap.

Meyer, a senior from Gregory, said this research topic was chosen through conversations about emotional intelligence and how it related to businesses.

“Emotional intelligence has become a more prevalent point of conversation,” said Benner, a senior from Murrieta, Calif. “In the marketing field, understanding the emotional intelligence of your target market can assist in creating a more effective ad campaign to reach that market.”

Meyer, who is double majoring in management and marketing with a minor in human resource management, said she is very excited to present at the MMA Conference.

“This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear about other research, and network with marketing practitioners, and educators as well,” Meyer said.

Benner, who is double majoring in business management and marketing, said she’s excited for the opportunity to represent Northern with a fellow classmate and friend.

“It’s an amazing chance for us to present, learn and network amongst individuals in the marketing field,” Benner said. “Further, I’ve never been to Chicago; NSU can, literally, take you places.”

Northern has truly helped foster this success, Meyer said, through support and mentorship from Walters, and all of the resources campus offers to support undergraduate research.

“Northern State University has extraordinary professors who truly care about the success of their students,” Benner said. “With the guidance of Dr. Hannah Walters, Ashley and I had the confidence to conduct this research and apply to this conference.”
