ABERDEEN, S.D. – All three awards in Brown County Historical Society’s annual research and writing contest went to Northern State University students.

NSU student winners and their winning entries are listed below:

Mitchell Hanes with cat

First Place: Mitchell A. Hanes, a political science and history double major from Aberdeen, won first place for his paper, “Father Robert William Haire: The Life of South Dakota’s Pioneer Socialist.”

 Second Place: James Heisinger, a history education major from Sioux Falls with minors in political science and international studies, won   second place for his paper, “Barry Goldwater: Losing the Battle But Winning the War.”

Third Place: Darcy Usher, a history major from Kinsley, Kan., with a public history minor, won third place for her paper, “Capt. William H. Daly: A Country Boy Goes to War.”

Each of the students received a certificate and a cash prize for their winning papers.
