Student researchers presenting their research

ABERDEEN, S.D. –Three Northern State University students were awarded grants for the fall semester to fund their independent research projects.

The students received the NSU Northern Edge Award, a new undergraduate scholarship intended to aid students in under-represented disciplines and/or projects that may not be normally be eligible for other funding opportunities on campus.

“The Northern Edge Award is one of the many great resources we have for undergraduate researchers to make their interests and passions a reality at NSU,” said Dr. Andrew Russell, NSU director of undergraduate research. “It is so valuable for our students, because it makes acquiring funding for a project more accessible to disciplines outside of the hard sciences.”

Students from any discipline are eligible to apply, but Russell said the award was specifically created with students from the arts and humanities in mind.

“We hope to see a lot more projects funded in these areas in the coming years,” he said.

For the fall semester, three NSU students were awarded grants to fund their research:

·Lincoln Flakus, from Aberdeen, received funding for “Assessment of Advertising Appeals Using Google Ads,” under faculty members Drs. Hannah Walters and Doug Ohmer.

·Kate Finley, from Chelsea, received funding for “Pushing Creative Boundaries While Pursuing Excellence,” under faculty members Ms. Alexis Doerr and Dr. Kenneth Boulton.

·Tony Mangialetti, from Frederick, Md., received funding for “Implementing HyFlex: A Study of Faculty Using HyFlex Course Design for the First Time,” under faculty members Drs. Ben Harley and Alyssa Kiesow. Mangialetti will present his findings at the Conference of Higher Education Pedagogy.
