ABERDEEN, S.D. – A world-renowned saxophonist will provide a multimedia musical performance on Monday at Northern State University.

Dr. John Sampen will present “In Two Worlds: Exploring the Duality of Music and Society” at 7:30 p.m. April 1 in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will also feature composer/engineer Mark Bunce.

Sampen and Bunce have traveled all over the world, offering unique master classes and concert presentations for saxophone and the electronic medium. Their tours have included recent trips to the Northwest, the Carolinas, the Southwest, New England and many other locations throughout the mainland U.S. They have also toured Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, Greece and Canada.

“In Two Worlds” represents their current multi-disciplinary presentation and is designed as an exciting “seamless” musical experience featuring projected visuals, interactive electronics and theatrical activities. Representative composers include John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, Morton Subotnick, Brian Egan, Marilyn Shrude, William Bolcom and Mark Bunce. Actual composer voices are heard via recorded readings and poetry, thus bringing the composer “spiritually” into the live concert space.

Sampen, one of the leading concert saxophonists in the United States, is a distinguished artist professor at Bowling Green State University as well as past-president of the North American Saxophone Alliance.
