Two student musical performers

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University students Tanner Shultis and John Cassens will hold their senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in Northern’s Krikac Auditorium.

Shultis, the son of Randy and Tessa Schabot of Aberdeen, graduated from Central High School in 2015.

Cassens, the son of Craig and Laura Cassens, graduated from Faulkton Area High School in 2015.

Shultis and Cassens, both baritenors, will perform a selection of classical and musical theater tunes. Mary Marion and Tierra Decker will be the accompanists at the recital.

A music education major, Shultis studied with Michael Skyles during his time at Northern. He chose to attend NSU because of its music program, and because family members were alums.

“It has a very good music program and my mother and uncle both attended Northern,” he said. “My uncle also graduated from Northern with a music education major.”

Shultis, who will graduate from Northern in December, said after graduation he plans to be active in music ministry, teach music in the private sector and perform.

Cassens has also studied with Skyles during his time at NSU, and he said he chose Northern because of both Skyles and Dr. Alan LaFave.

Cassens, who will graduate from NSU in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, plans to attend graduate school at a music conservatory.
