COVID-19 News

Through the S.D. Department of Health, Northern has secured BinaxNOW/Quidel over the counter COVID tests. These test kits are free to NSU faculty, staff and students. Students can pick up their kits at Student Affairs (Avera Student Center 222). Faculty and staff should check with their direct supervisors. Complimentary COVID testing for all South Dakotans are still available through Vault Health’s website as well. These are available for both symptomatic/asymptomatic and vaccinated/unvaccinated individuals. For additional COVID-19 information, visit northern.edu/covid-19covid.sd.gov or cdc.gov.

Military Veterans Affairs News

Gold Star Spouse Day: April 5 is a day dedicated to the surviving loved ones who have lost someone in the line of duty. The day is used to offer remembrance for the spouses and their families and a time of recognition of their sacrifices.

NSU Hosting American Legion Cording Ceremony: On May 4, 2022, from 6 to 7 p.m., Northern Military Veteran Affairs will host the American Legion Cording Ceremony for graduating Service Members and Veterans. The Aberdeen American Legion Post presents a red, white and blue cord to graduates honoring and celebrating dedicated service to the U.S. and Aberdeen citizens. Students wear the cords at commencement. The program is open to family, friends, and the Aberdeen community. Location is to be determined.

Enrollment Certifications: Each semester, the NSU Military Veteran Affairs staff certify enrollments for students receiving Military Tuition Assistance, South Dakota State Tuition Assistance or Veteran Education Benefits. The staff submits certifications after the census date for each term:

  •        202250 Summer 1 (5 weeks) May 31-July 1 – Census Date: July 10
  •        202250 Summer 2 (5 weeks) July 5-Aug. 5 – Census Date: July 15
  •        202250 Summer 3 (10 weeks) May 31-Aug. 5 – Census Date: July 10

 

Meet and Greet with Director of Athletics: Northern invites the campus and community to a welcome reception for NSU Director of Athletics Nate Davis. The meet and greet event with Davis will take place 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Kessler’s Champions Room of the NSU Barnett Center. Complimentary hors d’ oeuvres and beverages will be provided.

 

It’s Time to Register for Classes! Registration for spring 2023 classes is open through April 8. Contact your academic advisor for your specific time ticket and details. To register, log into Self-Service Banner (SSB), and register for classes. Register as soon as your time ticket allows to ensure the best course availability.

Finalize next year’s course registration and complete your 2022-23 FAFSA application by April 20, 2022, and be eligible to win textbook scholarships, tuition scholarships, campus parking passes and NSU swag! (All drawing recipients will be notified by NSU email.)

Students: Make sure you vote in SGA elections this week! All undergraduate and graduate students have received an e-mail with a unique link to use to vote at a secure site. Your voice matters; select the Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates and Senators you believe will best represent you for the 2022-23 academic year. Please vote Friday, April 8 at 5 p.m.! For more information about Student Government Association, please email SGA President Jacob D. Swanson at Jacob.Swanson@wolves.northern.edu. All students are welcome to attend SGA Senate meetings at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Missouri River Room.

 

Volunteers Needed for CultureFest: CultureFest Committee is looking for staff, faculty and student volunteers to plan and execute the next CultureFest Fall 2022. For more information and if you would like to be a part of this Multicultural event, please contact Dominika.Blum@northern.edu.

 

Hygiene Drive Extended: The Pre-Health Club is extending its hygiene drive for Safe Harbor. They are in need of the following items: oral care products, conditioner and other hair care products, toilet paper, feminine products, laundry soap, cleaning supplies, diapers (all sizes), and baby wipes. Donations can be dropped off in Graham 114 or Science Center 217 until April 8.

 

Funding the Future: Northern is hosting Funding the Future on their spring 2022 Financial Literacy Tour. This event, open to all NSU and PC students, will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 5 in Krikac Auditorium. Funding the Future is a nonprofit organization that teaches students vital financial principles by organizing live musical performances at schools across the nation and creating a dialogue around financial literacy between students and musicians. Featured artist will be Carter Hulsey, an Alternative-Rock/Americana singer-songwriter from Nashville, who will show students simple things they can do right away to get ahead in their finances. He will cover topics such as credit score, college expenses, buying a car, pay-day lenders and Roth IRAs. For more information, contact kerry.casper@northern.edu.

 

Welcome to the Silent Book Club! This isn’t your regular book club. No set books to read (that's the "silent" part), no pressure to share or discuss. Never worry if you haven't finished the book. No judgment.

Simply bring yourself and whatever you're currently reading (we don't care about genres or formats, anything goes!) All readers are welcome—even e-readers. The Silent Book Club is about community. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can join.

Please consider joining if you are unable to find time and space to just enjoy a book. That's it! No pressure whatsoever.

The Silent Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month from 4-5 p.m.

American Indian Circle Program: NSU is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to participate in our monthly Smudge the first Tuesday of every month from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. This is a time where we come together and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. For the spring 2022 semester, we will smudge in the courtyard outside MJ 112, which is the new Circle Program student space under the Student Success Center. Everyone is welcome! 

 

GiveNDay On Campus Event Moved to Barnett Center: Join Dr. Chelsee Shortt’s Event Planning & Program Development class for an on-campus GiveNDay Celebration in the Barnett Center on Wednesday, April 6. There will be free food, a cornhole tournament, and the chance to pie your favorite professor or coach. Every donation made through the GiveNDay site (givingday.northern.edu), qualifies for a chance to throw a pie at a professor or coach or covers the entry fee for the cornhole tournament. See you there!

 

Noon Forums: This week’s NSU Noon Forum, “How to Run and Why,” with Logan Manhart, Brian Bengs and others,  will take place at noon Wednesday, April 6, in the Williams Library Rotunda. Forums, which are free and open to the public, continue throughout the semester as follows:

  • April 13: “Do Comics Rot Your Brain? Using Sequential Art in the Classroom,” Dr. Kane Anderson
  • April 20: “Five Essential Songs and Mantras,” Dr. Pam Monaghan-Geernaert and others

Northern Lights Launch Party: The annual Northern Lights launch party has been rescheduled for April 6, 2022, at 6 p.m. in the Lincoln Art Gallery (LH 115). Print issues will be available for purchase (cash or check accepted) at the launch party and afterward by contacting current President Madi Filber via email at madi.filber@wolves.northern.edu, who can also answer any questions via email. All students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome! 

 

Honors Program Speaker: The Honors Program will host speaker, author and former “Survivor” contestant Holly Hoffman at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6. The event, which is free and open to campus and the community, will take place in the Kessler’s Champions Club Room in the NSU Barnett Center addition. 

 

Tuba Recital: Dr. Travis Netzer will hold a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in Krikac Auditorium. Netzer, a lecturer of tuba and euphonium at NSU, will perform a tuba recital that blends classical and popular music. He will combine more traditional performance repertoire with “rock tuba,” in which he uses guitar distortion pedals and loops stations to perform covers of rock tunes. The recital is free and open to the public.

 

Easter Sale at the NSU Wolf Shoppe: The NSU Wolf Shoppe will have an Easter Sale on Friday, April 8, through Thursday, April 14. Open an egg to reveal your discount of 15-30 percent off clothing and giftware, including clearance clothing!

 

OLC RFP: CETL is excited to oversee the OLC RFP, which provides funding for two Online Teaching Certificate programs conducted by the Online Learning Consortium (OLC).  Deadline to apply is April 8, 2022.  Please read the full details in the OLC RFP. Contact Danette, danette.long@northern.edu, with any questions. 

 

ACCA Concert: The Aberdeen Community Concert Association will present The Diamonds: Let’s Rock Broadway, at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2022, in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. Students can attend the concert free with their student ID! Tickets for the general public are available at Interior Design Concepts, 21 N. Main St., Aberdeen, or online at the ACCA website.

 

CPHCE Discussion: The NSU Center for Public History and Civic Engagement will host a discussion, “Russian Revanchism in Ukraine: Nuclear Weapons, NATO and Neutrality,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12. The event, which will take place in Centennial C and D of the NSU Avera Student Center, will feature speaker Brian Bengs, former assistant professor of criminal justice at NSU. Bengs will discuss revanchism, a political movement within a country to reverse prior loss of territory. With a focus on the situation in Ukraine, Bengs will explore the architecture and rules of the international system regarding the use of armed force, including the link between the United Nations and NATO for determining an appropriate response to aggression. Bengs’ presentation is free and open to the public.

Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum: The annual NSU Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, in the Beulah Williams Library.
