Welcome Back Sale at the Wolf Shoppe

Testing Center Changes

The NSU Testing Center has relocated to Library 154A and now has a new phone number: 605-626-2029. Students who are seeking proctoring services can reserve a testing time by visiting this webpage or sending an email to nsu.proctor@wolves.northern.edu.

Volunteer Crossing Guards Needed

May Overby Elementary School is looking for afternoon crossing guards! Typically, a shift runs from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. Contact Mike.Neubert@k12.sd.us if interested. This school is seeing an increase in traffic due to NSU construction projects.

Symphonic Band Auditions

Fall 2018 Symphonic Band auditions will take place Wednesday, Aug. 22, and Thursday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Jewett Theater, Johnson Fine Arts Center 300

5-minute audition: chromatic scale; Ab major scale (start on Ab for your instrument); short prepared piece/solo or etude of your choice; brief sight reading.

Swanson Senior Recital is Aug. 23

Elsa Swanson will hold a senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, in Krikac Auditorium. Swanson, a music education major, is a soprano. She will perform "Piangero, la sorte mia" by G.F. Handel; “Le Colibri,” “La Cigale” and “Le Tempes des Lilas” by Ernest Chausson; “Nacht und Träume" and "Gretchen am Spinnrade" by Franz Schubert; and "The Road to Avrillé," "Sweet Sounds, Oh Beautiful Music," "I Drank at Every Vine" and "The Spring and The Fall" by Sven Lekberg. She will be accompanied by Dr. William Wieland. NSU alums Molly Royals, clarinet, and Brady Vandevort, trombone, will also be playing pieces at the recital.

Register for Club Rush

Registration for Club Rush has been sent out to all club presidents and advisors. Make sure to complete your registration and return it to Janie Borkowski in the CAB Office (Student Center 208) by Friday, Aug. 24, at 5 p.m. For questions, please contact Borkowski at Janie.borkowski@northern.edu. Club Rush will take place on Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NSU Theater Auditions

Open auditions for the fall 2018 NSU Department of Theater shows will take place on Friday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Featured this semester are the Broadway musical “Man of La Mancha” and “The SantaLand Diaries,” adapted from an essay by David Sedaris. Auditions and technical theater positions are open to all students. Auditions will be held in the Black Box Theatre of the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Please see the Theater Department Call Board in JFAC for detailed character breakdowns, synopsis, vocal ranges and available technical positions.

For “Man of La Mancha,” please prepare 32 bars from a song in the style of the show, and bring a copy of your sheet music for the pianist. If you do not have a song prepared, music will be available to learn on site. Copies of the prompt book and vocal parts are available in the Beulah Williams Library for perusal.

For “The SantaLand Diaries,” please prepare a 90 second comedic monologue or spoken word piece.

Nashville Unplugged coming to Northern                                                                                                            

Nashville Unplugged: The Story Behind the Song will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. The show brings successful songwriters from Nashville to Aberdeen to discuss and perform their hit songs. Northern students will be admitted free. NSU Concert Band Starts Aug. 27

NSU Concert Band is a non-auditioned group and starts Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. in JFAC 158. Email Dr. Miller with questions regarding Concert Band: Audrey.Miller@northern.edu.

This back-to-school celebration for NSU and Presentation College students is scheduled for Aug. 28 in downtown Aberdeen.

Community Marketplace is Sept. 5

The annual Community Marketplace is your premier event to network with local employers and volunteer organizations, learn about goods and services provided in the Aberdeen community, and find part-time employment. This career kick-off event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Campus Green (Student Center if inclement weather) and is free for students to attend! Don't miss this great opportunity to learn more about goods, services, internships and employment in the area. Contact Career Services or the Student Involvement and Leadership office to learn more. 

Constitution Day is Sept. 17

Mark your calendars now for Constitution Day on Monday, Sept. 17! Anyone on campus is encouraged to participate with patriotic decorations, etc. Any on-campus organization, department, or student group that has a planned event or activity they want to present on Constitution Day, contact Dr. Ric Dias: Ric.Dias@northern.edu. International Programs Office seeking ‘Friendship Families’

The International Programs Office is looking for families to participate in the Friendship Family Program. The program involves spending time with international student(s) at least once a month while they are studying here at Northern. The program is intended to give international students a more in-depth experience in American culture and another source of support. Families are expected to invite students to participate in events or activities the family already does, such as watching a movie at home or at the theater, going to sporting and/or artistic events, and cooking at home. Gypsy Day Parade Registration Open

Online registration for the 103rd annual NSU Gypsy Day Parade continues. Individuals and groups interested in entering the parade will be able to access the online form. Registration will include a $25 participation fee. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, with a start time of 9 a.m. This year’s parade theme is “Wolves at the Movies.” For information, click here to read more, or contact the NSU Student Affairs office at 605-626-3007 or gypsydays@northern.edu.

2018 Hall of Fame Banquet 

The 2018 Hall of Fame Banquet is set for Friday, Sept. 28, at the Best Western Ramkota. The night will kick off with a social hour at 5 p.m. in the banquet room, followed by the dinner and program at 6 p.m. Tickets are required to attend the banquet, and are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Those looking to attend should contact the Northern State University Foundation at 605-626-2550 or nsualumni@northern.edu by Sept. 15, 2018. The 2018 Hall of Fame class includes Noelle (Hall) Bergan, Baron Blanchard, Melissa (Gamble) Haggins, Eric Longhenry, Dale McElhany, and the 1969 Wolves football team. 2018 Common Read Lecture is Nov. 14

Angie Thomas, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” will deliver NSU’s 2018 Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture—is free and open to the public. The award-winning “The Hate U Give” has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. NSU Culturefest is Nov. 1

Organizers of Culturefest are seeking entertainment and community groups to participate in the event this fall on the Northern campus. Culturefest, a celebration of cultures from around the nation and the world, will be held 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Barnett Center. Culturefest is free and open to the public. Great Russian Nutcracker will return to NSU on Nov. 26

The one and only Moscow Ballet Great Russian Nutcracker will return to the Northern State University Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Click here to read more. Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition

The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion. Click here to read more information about the competition.
