NSU Concert Band Starts Aug. 27

NSU Concert Band is a non-auditioned group and starts Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. in JFAC 158. Email Dr. Miller with questions regarding Concert Band: Audrey.Miller@northern.edu.

COLLEGEpalooza is Aug. 28

This back-to-school celebration for NSU and Presentation College students is scheduled for Aug. 28 in downtown Aberdeen. The event includes a business walk from 4 to 6 p.m. Guns-N-Hoses tug-o-war will take place at 5:15 p.m., and scholarship drawings will be held at 5:30 p.m. For more information, email info@aberdeen-chamber.com.

Club Rush is Aug. 29

Club Rush will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 29 on the campus green outside the Student Center. (In case of inclement weather, it will be held inside the Student Center.) Several student organizations will have tables to promote their groups and recruit new members.

Business Club to Meet

The Business Club will be meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. in Lincoln 224.

Splash! Event set for Aug. 30 

Splash! will be held Thursday, Aug. 30, 7:30-8:30 p.m. on the campus green. This event, sponsored by Intervarsity, is a giant water balloon fight, a version of the game capture the flag. Individuals will be placed on teams when they arrive. Other lawn games and activities will also take place. 

Info Sessions for 2019 NSU Summer in China Program

The NSU Confucius Institute and Office of International Programs is pleased to announce the 2019 NSU Summer in China program, an affordable opportunity for students across the SDBOR schools to study abroad at Northern’s partner, the University of Jinan. For 2019, Professor Susan Landon-Arnold will offer the course “Medicine in China” in the mornings while students take their Chinese language and culture class in the afternoons.

Students will depart on May 6 and return June 10. The program includes weekend excursions to Beijing and more. The student cost for the program is round-trip airfare, tuition, visa, and excursion costs. Reimbursement is available to offset the airfare.

Information sessions will be held in the Student Center Gold Room as follows:

Wednesday, Aug 29, at 2 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m.

Community Marketplace is Sept. 5

The annual Community Marketplace is your premier event to network with local employers and volunteer organizations, learn about goods and services provided in the Aberdeen community, and find part-time employment. This career kick-off event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Campus Green (Student Center if inclement weather) and is free for students to attend! Don't miss this great opportunity to learn more about goods, services, internships and employment in the area. Contact Career Services or the Student Involvement and Leadership office to learn more. 

Chinese Brush Painting Workshops begin Sept. 11

Chinese brush painting workshops will be held Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in the Student Center from Sept. 11 to Oct 30. The workshops are free to NSU students, faculty and staff.  All levels are welcome.

All-State Orchestra Workshop 

Area high school students who are preparing for All-State Orchestra auditions are invited to the first-ever All-State Orchestra Workshop with the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony. The free event will be held 7-9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. Students will work on the same literature required for All-State Orchestra auditions, and the workshop will end with a question-and-answer panel of Northern faculty providing tips for a successful audition. Registration will take place at the door. Primrose Arts and Lecture Series

The 2018-19 NSU-Primrose Arts and Lecture Series will start Sept. 11 and take place throughout the academic school year at Aberdeen's Primrose Retirement Community, located at 1701 Third Avenue S.E.

Presenters and topics are as follows:

Sept. 11: "Music for Piano Four-Hands"; presented by Dr. Kenneth Boulton and Ms. JoAnne Barry.

Oct. 9: "From Russia to Aberdeen with Love"; presented by Dr. Elvira Sanatullova-Allison, Dean of Millicent Atkins School of Education.

Nov. 13: "James King, Indian Scout"; presented by Dr. David Grettler, professor of history.

Feb. 12: "Hub City History: Preserving and Presenting the Past in the NSU Archives"; presented by Mr. Robert Russell, director of Beulah Williams Library.

March 12: "Ceramic Form and Fragment: Artwork of Gratia Brown"; presented by Ms. Gratia Brown, Assistant Professor of Art.

April 9: "NSU:  At Home in the World - An Overview of NSU's International Programs"; presented by Dr. Leigh Neys, director of International Programs.

Online Parade Registration Deadline is Sept. 14

Online registration for the 103rd annual NSU Gypsy Day Parade continues until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. Individuals and groups interested in entering the parade can register via the online form. Registration will include a $25 participation fee. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, with a start time of 9 a.m. This year’s parade theme is “Wolves at the Movies.” For information, click here to read more, or contact the NSU Student Affairs office at 605-626-3007 or gypsydays@northern.edu.

Constitution Day is Sept. 17

Mark your calendars now for Constitution Day on Monday, Sept. 17! Anyone on campus is encouraged to participate with patriotic decorations, etc. Any on-campus organization, department, or student group that has a planned event or activity they want to present on Constitution Day, contact Dr. Ric Dias: Ric.Dias@northern.edu. Create ‘N’ is Sept. 19

The 2018 Create ‘N’: A Festival Celebrating Entrepreneurship, Creativity, Innovation and Workforce will take place Wednesday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. Keynote speakers are Dr. Art Diamond, Darrell D. Dorrell and Ron Gulaskey. The themes for the fall Wolf Talks series are: community, courage, responsibility and creating change. The schedule appears below:

Wolf Talks, which are free and open to the public, are held in conjunction with the NSU Common Read and are sponsored by TRIO Student Support Services.

2018 Hall of Fame Banquet 

The 2018 Hall of Fame Banquet is set for Friday, Sept. 28, at the Best Western Ramkota. The night will kick off with a social hour at 5 p.m. in the banquet room, followed by the dinner and program at 6 p.m. Tickets are required to attend the banquet, and are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Those looking to attend should contact the Northern State University Foundation at 605-626-2550 or nsualumni@northern.edu by Sept. 15, 2018. The 2018 Hall of Fame class includes Noelle (Hall) Bergan, Baron Blanchard, Melissa (Gamble) Haggins, Eric Longhenry, Dale McElhany, and the 1969 Wolves football team. NSU Culturefest is Nov. 1

Organizers of Culturefest are seeking entertainment and community groups to participate in the event this fall on the Northern campus. Culturefest, a celebration of cultures from around the nation and the world, will be held 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Barnett Center. Culturefest is free and open to the public. Individuals or groups interested in participating are encouraged to contact the NSU Office of International Programs at 605-626-7802 or international@northern.edu.

2018 Common Read Lecture is Nov. 14

Angie Thomas, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “The Hate U Give,” will deliver NSU’s 2018 Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The event—Northern’s eighth annual Common Read Lecture—is free and open to the public. The award-winning “The Hate U Give” has received starred reviews from eight literary journals and has been optioned by Fox 2000 and Temple Hill Production. Great Russian Nutcracker will return to NSU on Nov. 26

The one and only Moscow Ballet Great Russian Nutcracker will return to the Northern State University Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Click here to read more. Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition

The Northern State University School of Fine Arts has announced that it will launch the first annual Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The music performance competition will be open to juniors and seniors from high schools throughout South Dakota and surrounding states. Generous prizes will be offered for first, second and third place winners in four categories including piano, strings, voice and wind/percussion. Click here to read more information about the competition.

International Programs Office seeking ‘Friendship Families’

The International Programs Office is looking for families to participate in the Friendship Family Program. The program involves spending time with international student(s) at least once a month while they are studying here at Northern. The program is intended to give international students a more in-depth experience in American culture and another source of support. Families are expected to invite students to participate in events or activities the family already does, such as watching a movie at home or at the theater, going to sporting and/or artistic events, and cooking at home. Volunteer Crossing Guards Needed

May Overby Elementary School is looking for afternoon crossing guards! Typically, a shift runs from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. Contact Mike.Neubert@k12.sd.us if interested. This school is seeing an increase in traffic due to NSU construction projects.
